After moving to Alberta, Rab Jordan, co-owner and operator of Northernhawk Hops, missed the sense of nostalgia and familiarity hops had brought him from the U.K. Having always had an abiding love for all things hops, Rab felt as though a hops garden was a market missing within Alberta– especially as there is absolutely no money in Canadian Thistle! As Rab had spent a significant amount of time picking hops at the hops gardens in Kent and Sussex growing up, hops gardening was nothing unfamiliar to him.
However, in Franc’s case, he had never heard of a hop– let alone a hop’s garden– so the growing and gardening process was something he had to extensively research and practice through a series of trial and error. Never settling for less than perfect, Franc quickly discovered the right combination to effectively achieve top-quality hops every crop season.
Even though there is no Blessing of the Hops parade here in Canada, Rab and Franc still continue to marvel at the change in the hop's growth after a Midsummer’s Day as a celebration of the cumulation of the hops year.
Although born in Canada, Rab was primarily raised in the UK. He achieved a PhD in Nursing from the University of Edinburgh, and has taught at various universities. Rab originally started his farm with a flock of sheep and some Jersey cows but after founding Northerhawk Hops from a single acre with Franc in 2017, he’s been growing hops ever since and hasn’t looked back. He especially enjoys reminiscing about the Blessing of the Hops – a celebratory parade of hops from home – as he smells the freshly harvested hops on a marvellous midsummer’s day.
Franc specializes in trade work and has Red Seal qualifications in welding, pressure welding, picker operation, and stationary crane operating. He has put these skills to use by designing devices to help with the hop garden. He decided to experiment with growing hops this far north with Rab, and wants to expand their varieties in the years to come. Franc finds satisfaction in seeing and smelling his full field of hops during the autumn after a hard-working season.
Nick is a long-term employee who was recruited over eight years ago by a chance meeting between Franc and Nick on the adjacent farm. He has since become an invaluable member of Northernhawk Hops, who operates the equipment in the garden and tends to the hops alongside his now-good friends, Rob and Franc. Nick has found peace, purpose, and a home at Northernhawk Hops. Along with beer – his favourite product from their hops, he enjoys jumping into a massive pile of processed hops bines after harvest!
